What is Fascia?

Fascia is the sheathing that encompasses the muscles and holds them together in tightly layered and aligned bundles. A gluelike webbing supporting and providing form to muscles from the outside and inside. Holding the muscles in place the fascia molds and and flexes tightens and releases with every movement, constantly working to support and balance the body. This highly complex system of muscle and surrounding fascial tissue represents one of the most amazing functions of the human form. It is a beutiful example of how interdependent all the elements of the body are and how they work together establish optimal balance between energy usage, immune response, nutrition, detoxification, and healing. Stretching and contracting always searching for the optimal function under any particual circumstance.

The Fascia can be negatively affected when someone experiences an injury or physical or emotional trauma by tightning or succumbing to restrictive holding patterns. It can also become distorted due to bad posture, work related repetitive movement or lack of movement due to years of working at a desk. This can throw the body off balance causing bad posture and many forms of discomfort even pain forcing other areas of the body to work harder to compensate and consequently causes further impairment.
